Shopify Speed Optimization: How to Pass Core Web Vitals

A faster Shopify store converts better and ranks better. Here is a practical guide to measuring speed correctly and fixing the issues that matter most for Core Web Vitals.

By the OneNext Solutions team · 9 min read · Updated 8 November 2026

Measure the right things

  • Field data - real-user Core Web Vitals from Google Search Console and PageSpeed Insights
  • Lab data - Lighthouse for debugging specific issues
  • Key templates - homepage, collection, product and cart

The Core Web Vitals thresholds

MetricWhat it measuresGood
LCP (Largest Contentful Paint)Loading speed of the main content2.5s or less
INP (Interaction to Next Paint)Responsiveness to taps and clicks200ms or less
CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift)Visual stability0.1 or less

1. Optimize images

  • Serve correctly sized images with responsive srcset
  • Use modern formats such as WebP
  • Lazy-load images below the fold, but not the main hero image
  • Set width and height to prevent layout shift

2. Audit apps and scripts

Remove unused apps and the code they leave behind, defer non-critical scripts and avoid loading heavy widgets on every page.

3. Streamline your theme

Use a modern Online Store 2.0 theme, remove unused sections, minimize render-blocking CSS and avoid large JavaScript libraries for simple effects.

4. Fonts

Limit font families and weights, use font-display: swap and preload the fonts used above the fold.

5. Third-party tags

Load analytics and marketing tags carefully - every tag adds weight. Review them regularly and remove what you no longer use.

6. Improve INP

Break up long JavaScript tasks, reduce heavy app scripts and keep interactions such as variant selectors and add-to-cart lightweight.

When to get help

If your store still struggles after these steps, a technical audit usually uncovers theme or app issues. Our Shopify audit and support and maintenance teams improve speed without breaking your store.
